I and the Father Are One

²²At that time the Feast of Dedication took place at Jerusalem. It was winter, ²³and Jesus was walking in the temple, ^(A)in the colonnade of Solomon. ²⁴So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are ^(B)the Christ, ^(C)tell us plainly.” ²⁵Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. ^(D)The works that I do ^(E)in my Father's name bear witness about me, ²⁶but ^(F)you do not believe because you are not among my sheep. ²⁷^(G)My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. ²⁸^(H)I give them eternal life, and ^(I)they will never perish, and ^(J)no one will snatch them out of my hand. ²⁹My Father, ^(K)who has given them to me,^[a] ^(L)is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of ^(M)the Father's hand. ³⁰^(N)I and the Father are one.”

³¹^(O)The Jews picked up stones again to stone him. ³²Jesus answered them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you going to stone me?” ³³The Jews answered him, “It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but ^(P)for blasphemy, because you, being a man, ^(Q)make yourself God.” ³⁴Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in ^(R)your Law, ^(S)‘I said, you are gods’? ³⁵If he called them gods to whom the word of God came—and Scripture cannot be ^(T)broken— ³⁶do you say of him whom ^(U)the Father consecrated and ^(V)sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because ^(W)I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? ³⁷^(X)If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me; ³⁸but if I do them, ^(Y)even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that ^(Z)the Father is in me and I am in the Father.” ³⁹^(AA)Again they sought to arrest him, but he escaped from their hands.

⁴⁰He went away again across the Jordan to the place ^(AB)where John had been baptizing at first, and there he remained. ⁴¹And many came to him. And they said, “John did no sign, but ^(AC)everything that John said about this man was true.” ⁴²And ^(AD)many believed in him there.

Job Replies: The Lord Has Done This

12 Then Job answered and said:

²“No doubt you are the people,
    and wisdom will die with you.
³But I have ^(A)understanding as well as you;
    I am not inferior to you.
    Who does not know ^(B)such things as these?
⁴I am ^(C)a laughingstock to my friends;
    I, who ^(D)called to God and he answered me,
    a just and blameless man, am a laughingstock.
⁵In the thought of one who is ^(E)at ease there is contempt for misfortune;
    it is ready for those whose feet slip.
⁶^(F)The tents of robbers are at peace,
    and those who provoke God are secure,
    who bring their god in their hand.^[a]

⁷“But ask the beasts, and they will teach you;
    the birds of the heavens, and they will tell you;
⁸or the bushes of the earth, and they will teach you;^[b]
    and the fish of the sea will declare to you.
⁹Who among all these does not know
    that ^(G)the hand of the Lord has done this?
¹⁰In ^(H)his hand is the life of every living thing
    and the breath of all mankind.
¹¹Does not ^(I)the ear test words
    as the palate tastes food?
¹²Wisdom is with ^(J)the aged,
    and understanding in length of days.

¹³^(K)“With God^[c] are wisdom and might;
    he has counsel and understanding.
¹⁴If he tears down, none can rebuild;
    if he ^(L)shuts a man in, none can open.
¹⁵If he ^(M)withholds the waters, they dry up;
    if he ^(N)sends them out, they overwhelm the land.
¹⁶With him are strength and ^(O)sound wisdom;
    the deceived and the deceiver are his.
¹⁷He leads ^(P)counselors away stripped,
    and ^(Q)judges he makes fools.
¹⁸He ^(R)looses the bonds of kings
    and binds a waistcloth on their hips.
¹⁹He leads priests away stripped
    and overthrows the mighty.
²⁰He deprives of speech those who are trusted
    ^(S)and takes away the discernment of the elders.
²¹He ^(T)pours contempt on princes
    and loosens the belt of the strong.
²²He ^(U)uncovers the deeps out of darkness
    and brings ^(V)deep darkness to light.
²³He ^(W)makes nations great, and he destroys them;
    he enlarges nations, and ^(X)leads them away.
²⁴He takes away understanding from the chiefs of the people of the earth
    and ^(Y)makes them wander in a trackless waste.
²⁵They ^(Z)grope in the dark without light,
    and he makes them ^(AA)stagger like a drunken man.
