²⁵ The one who loves his life will lose it,^(A) and the one who hates^(B) his life^(C) in this world will keep it for eternal life.

⁸ But God proves^(A) His own love for us^(B) in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us!

Love in Action

¹⁶ This is how we have come to know love: He laid down His life^(A) for us.^(B) We should also lay down our lives for our brothers.^(C)

⁹ God’s love was revealed among us in this way:^[a] God sent^(A) His One and Only Son^(B) into the world so that we might live^(C) through Him. ¹⁰ Love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that He loved us^(D) and sent His Son to be the^[b] propitiation^(E) for our sins.
