Disciples’ Relation to the World

¹⁸ “^(A)If the world hates you, ^[a]you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. ¹⁹ If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but ^(B)I chose you out of the world, ^(C)because of this the world hates you. ²⁰ Remember the word that I said to you, ‘^(D)A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, ^(E)they will persecute you as well; if they ^(F)followed My word, they will follow yours also. ²¹ But all these things they will do to you ^(G)on account of My name, ^(H)because they do not know the One who sent Me.

¹² Indeed, all who want to live in a godly way in Christ Jesus ^(A)will be persecuted.

²² strengthening the souls of ^(A)the disciples, encouraging them to continue in ^(B)the faith, and saying, “^(C)It is through many tribulations that we must enter the kingdom of God.”

^9 [a](A)So resist him, ^(B)firm in your faith, knowing that ^(C)the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your ^[b]brothers and sisters who are in the world.

Jesus’ Warning

16 “^(A)These things I have spoken to you so that you will not ^[a]be ^(B)led into sin. ² They will ^[b](C)ban you from the synagogue, yet ^(D)an hour is coming for everyone ^(E)who kills you to think that he is offering a ^[c]service to God. ³ These things they will do ^(F)because they have not known the Father nor Me.
