John 5:31-47

³¹^(A)If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true. ³²There is ^(B)another who bears witness about me, and ^(C)I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. ³³^(D)You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. ³⁴Not that ^(E)the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. ³⁵He was a burning and ^(F)shining lamp, and ^(G)you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. ³⁶But ^(H)the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For ^(I)the works that the Father has given me ^(J)to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, ^(K)bear witness about me that ^(L)the Father has sent me. ³⁷And the Father who sent me ^(M)has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, ^(N)his form you have never seen, ³⁸and ^(O)you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. ³⁹^(P)You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and ^(Q)it is they that bear witness about me, ⁴⁰yet ^(R)you refuse to come to me that you may have life. ⁴¹^(S)I do not receive glory from people. ⁴²But ^(T)I know that you do not have ^(U)the love of God within you. ⁴³I have come ^(V)in my Father's name, and ^(W)you do not receive me. ^(X)If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. ⁴⁴How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and ^(Y)do not seek the glory that comes from ^(Z)the only God? ⁴⁵Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, ^(AA)on whom you have set your hope. ⁴⁶For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for ^(AB)he wrote of me. ⁴⁷But ^(AC)if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”

³As an apple tree among the trees of the forest,
    so is my ^(C)beloved among the young men.
With great delight I sat ^(D)in his shadow,
    and his ^(E)fruit was sweet to my taste.
⁴He ^(F)brought me to the banqueting house,^[b]
    and his ^(G)banner over me was love.
⁵Sustain me with ^(H)raisins;
    refresh me with apples,
    ^(I)for I am sick with love.
⁶His ^(J)left hand is under my head,
    and his right hand ^(K)embraces me!
⁷I ^(L)adjure you,^[c] O ^(M)daughters of Jerusalem,
    by ^(N)the gazelles or the does of the field,
that you not stir up or awaken love
    until it pleases.

The Bride Adores Her Beloved

⁸The voice of my beloved!
    Behold, he comes,
leaping ^(O)over the mountains,
    bounding over the hills.
⁹My beloved is like ^(P)a gazelle
    or a young stag.
Behold, there he stands
    behind our wall,
gazing through the windows,
    looking through the lattice.
¹⁰My beloved speaks and says to me:
^(Q)“Arise, my love, my beautiful one,
    and come away,
¹¹for behold, the winter is past;
    ^(R)the rain is over and gone.
¹²^(S)The flowers appear on the earth,
    the time of singing^[d] has come,
and the voice of ^(T)the turtledove
    is heard in our land.
¹³^(U)The fig tree ripens its figs,
    and ^(V)the vines are in blossom;
    they give forth fragrance.
^(W)Arise, my love, my beautiful one,
    and come away.
¹⁴O my ^(X)dove, in the ^(Y)clefts of the rock,
    in the crannies of the cliff,
let me see your face,
    let me ^(Z)hear your voice,
for your voice is sweet,

¹⁵Catch ^(AB)the foxes^[e] for us,
    the little foxes
that spoil the vineyards,
    ^(AC)for our vineyards are in blossom.”
