The Word Became Flesh

1 In the beginning was the Word,^(A) and the Word was with God,^(B) and the Word was God.^{(C) 2} He was with God in the beginning.^{(D) 3} Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.^{(E) 4} In him was life,^(F) and that life was the light^(G) of all mankind.

¹⁰ He was in the world, and though the world was made through him,^(A) the world did not recognize him. ¹¹ He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.^{(B) 12} Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed^(C) in his name,^(D) he gave the right to become children of God^(E)— ¹³ children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.^(F)

¹⁴ The Word became flesh^(G) and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory,^(H) the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace^(I) and truth.^(J)

John Testifies About Jesus

²⁹ The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God,^(A) who takes away the sin of the world!^{(B) 30} This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’^(C)

⁹ But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor^(A) because he suffered death,^(B) so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.^(C)

¹⁰ In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists,^(D) should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered.^{(E) 11} Both the one who makes people holy^(F) and those who are made holy^(G) are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters.^[a](H)
