20 For the Father loves the Son(A) and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these,(B) so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,(C) even so the Son gives life(D) to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,(E) 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.(F)

24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me(G) has eternal life(H) and will not be judged(I) but has crossed over from death to life.(J) 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come(K) when the dead will hear(L) the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life(M) in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge(N) because he is the Son of Man.

28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming(O) when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.(P) 30 By myself I can do nothing;(Q) I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just,(R) for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.(S)

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.

33 Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time,(A) and then I am going to the one who sent me.(B) 34 You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.”(C)

13 The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.”(A)

14 Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going.(B) But you have no idea where I come from(C) or where I am going. 15 You judge by human standards;(D) I pass judgment on no one.(E) 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.(F) 17 In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.(G) 18 I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”(H)

19 Then they asked him, “Where is your father?”

“You do not know me or my Father,”(I) Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”(J) 20 He spoke these words while teaching(K) in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put.(L) Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.(M)

Dispute Over Who Jesus Is

21 Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die(N) in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”(O)

The Good Shepherd and His Sheep

10 “Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber.(A) The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.(B) The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice.(C) He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.(D) When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.(E) But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” Jesus used this figure of speech,(F) but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.(G)

Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am(H) the gate(I) for the sheep. All who have come before me(J) are thieves and robbers,(K) but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.[a] They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life,(L) and have it to the full.(M)

11 “I am(N) the good shepherd.(O) The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.(P) 12 The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away.(Q) Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

14 “I am the good shepherd;(R) I know my sheep(S) and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father(T)—and I lay down my life for the sheep.(U) 16 I have other sheep(V) that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock(W) and one shepherd.(X) 17 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life(Y)—only to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.(Z) I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”(AA)

19 The Jews who heard these words were again divided.(AB) 20 Many of them said, “He is demon-possessed(AC) and raving mad.(AD) Why listen to him?”

21 But others said, “These are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon.(AE) Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”(AF)

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

14 “Do not let your hearts be troubled.(A) You believe(B) in God[a];(C) believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there(D) to prepare a place for you? The Judgment of the Dead

11 Then I saw a great white throne(A) and him who was seated on it. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.(A) 12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is,(B) because the Day(C) will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.(D) 14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward.(E) 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.(F)
