I was forty years old[a] when Moses Yahweh’s servant sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the land, and I returned with an honest report.[b] My companions who went up with me made the hearts[c] of the people melt, but I remained true to Yahweh my God. And Moses swore on that day, saying, ‘Surely the land that your foot has trodden on will be an inheritance to you and your sons forever, because you remained true to Yahweh my God.’

I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh Barnea(A) to explore the land.(B) And I brought him back a report according to my convictions,(C) but my fellow Israelites who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt in fear.(D) I, however, followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.(E) So on that day Moses swore to me, ‘The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance(F) and that of your children(G) forever, because you have followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.’[a]
