When the avenger of blood comes after him, they must not hand over to him the one who committed manslaughter, for he accidentally killed his fellow man without premeditation.[a] He must remain[b] in that city until his case is decided by the assembly,[c] and the high priest dies.[d] Then the one who committed manslaughter may return home to the city from which he escaped.”[e]

So they selected[f] Kedesh in Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali, Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the hill country of Judah.

If the avenger of blood comes in pursuit, the elders must not surrender the fugitive, because the fugitive killed their neighbor unintentionally and without malice aforethought. They are to stay in that city until they have stood trial before the assembly(A) and until the death of the high priest who is serving at that time. Then they may go back to their own home in the town from which they fled.”

So they set apart Kedesh(B) in Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali, Shechem(C) in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath Arba(D) (that is, Hebron(E)) in the hill country of Judah.(F)
