16 the waters flowing from above stood still, rising up in a single heap far off at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan, while those flowing toward the sea of the Arabah, the Dead Sea,[a] were wholly cut off. Then the people crossed over opposite Jericho.(A) 17 While all Israel were crossing over on dry ground, the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firmly on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan, until the entire nation finished crossing over the Jordan.(B)

16 the water from upstream stopped flowing.(A) It piled up in a heap(B) a great distance away, at a town called Adam in the vicinity of Zarethan,(C) while the water flowing down(D) to the Sea of the Arabah(E) (that is, the Dead Sea(F)) was completely cut off.(G) So the people crossed over opposite Jericho.(H) 17 The priests(I) who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord stopped in the middle of the Jordan and stood on dry ground,(J) while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground.(K)
