So about three thousand men went up there, and they had to flee from before the men of Ai. They chased the Israelites from the city gate as far as the stone quarries and struck them down on the slopes. At this the hearts of the people melted in fear(C) and became like water.

Then Joshua tore his clothes(D) and fell facedown(E) to the ground before the ark of the Lord, remaining there till evening.(F) The elders of Israel(G) did the same, and sprinkled dust(H) on their heads.
