14 When the king of Ai saw this, the men of the city got up quickly and went out to face Israel in battle—the king and all his people—at the chosen place[a] facing the Arabah. But he did not know that there was an ambush for him west of the city. 15 Then Joshua and all Israel pretended to be beaten before them and fled toward the wilderness. 16 All the people that were in the city were marshaled to pursue them. As they pursued Joshua, they were lured away from the city.

14 When the king of Ai saw this, he and all the men of the city hurried out early in the morning to meet Israel in battle at a certain place overlooking the Arabah.(A) But he did not know(B) that an ambush had been set against him behind the city. 15 Joshua and all Israel let themselves be driven back(C) before them, and they fled toward the wilderness.(D) 16 All the men of Ai were called to pursue them, and they pursued Joshua and were lured away(E) from the city.
