3 When the inhabitants of (A)Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai, 4 they also acted craftily and [a]set out as envoys, and took worn-out sacks on their donkeys, and wineskins worn-out and torn and [b]mended, 5 and worn-out and patched sandals on their feet, and worn-out clothes on themselves; and all the bread of their provision was dry and had become crumbled.

3 However, when the people of Gibeon(A) heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,(B) 4 they resorted to a ruse: They went as a delegation whose donkeys were loaded[a] with worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended. 5 They put worn and patched sandals on their feet and wore old clothes.
