For whenever Israel had sown, the Midianites would come up with the Amalekites and the [a]people of the east and [b]march against them. So they would camp against them and (A)destroy the produce of the earth [c]as far as Gaza, and (B)leave no sustenance in Israel, nor a sheep, ox, or donkey. For they would come up with their livestock and their tents, they would come in (C)like locusts in number, and both they and their camels were innumerable; and they came into the land to ruin it. So Israel was brought (D)very low because of Midian, and the sons of Israel cried out to the Lord.

Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, the Midianites, Amalekites(A) and other eastern peoples(B) invaded the country. They camped on the land and ruined the crops(C) all the way to Gaza(D) and did not spare a living thing for Israel, neither sheep nor cattle nor donkeys. They came up with their livestock and their tents like swarms of locusts.(E) It was impossible to count them or their camels;(F) they invaded the land to ravage it. Midian so impoverished the Israelites that they cried out(G) to the Lord for help.
