¹⁹ Gideon replied, “Those were my brothers, the sons of my own mother. As surely as the Lord lives,^(A) if you had spared their lives, I would not kill you.”

³⁹ As surely as the Lord who rescues Israel lives,^(A) even if the guilt lies with my son Jonathan,^(B) he must die.”^(C) But not one of them said a word.

⁴⁵ But the men said to Saul, “Should Jonathan die—he who has brought about this great deliverance in Israel? Never! As surely as the Lord lives, not a hair^(A) of his head will fall to the ground, for he did this today with God’s help.” So the men rescued^(B) Jonathan, and he was not put to death.

⁶ Saul listened to Jonathan and took this oath: “As surely as the Lord lives, David will not be put to death.”
