New International Reader's Version

21 Then Jotham ran away. He escaped to a town named Beer. He lived there because he was afraid of his brother Abimelek.

22 Abimelek ruled over Israel for three years. 23 Then God stirred up trouble between Abimelek and the citizens of Shechem. So they turned against Abimelek. They decided not to follow him anymore.

22 After Abimelek had governed Israel three years, 23 God stirred up animosity(C) between Abimelek and the citizens of Shechem so that they acted treacherously against Abimelek.
