^56 (A)Thus God returned the evil of Abimelech, which he committed against his father in killing his seventy brothers.

³² The Lord will ^(A)bring back his bloody deeds on his own head, because, without the knowledge of my father David, he attacked and killed with the sword two men ^(B)more righteous and better than himself, ^(C)Abner the son of Ner, commander of the army of Israel, and ^(D)Amasa the son of Jether, commander of the army of Judah.

²⁵ But when it came before the king, he gave orders in writing ^(A)that his evil plan which he had devised against the Jews ^(B)should return on his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.^[a]

³⁵ so that on you may come all ^(A)the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of innocent ^(B)Abel to the blood of ^(C)Zechariah the son of Barachiah,^[a] whom you murdered between ^(D)the sanctuary and ^(E)the altar. ³⁶ Truly, I say to you, ^(F)all these things will come upon this generation.
