² Speak to the Israelites and tell them: Of all land animals these are the ones you may eat: ³ Any animal that has hoofs you may eat, provided it is cloven-footed and chews the cud. ⁴ But you shall not eat^(A) any of the following from among those that only chew the cud or only have hoofs: the camel, which indeed chews the cud, but does not have hoofs and is therefore unclean for you; ⁵ the rock hyrax,^[a] which indeed chews the cud, but does not have hoofs and is therefore unclean for you; ⁶ the hare, which indeed chews the cud, but does not have hoofs and is therefore unclean for you; ⁷ and the pig,^(B) which does indeed have hoofs and is cloven-footed, but does not chew the cud and is therefore unclean for you. ⁸ You shall not eat their meat, and you shall not touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you.

¹³ Every firstborn of a donkey you will ransom with a sheep. If you do not ransom it, you will break its neck. Every human firstborn of your sons you must ransom.

²⁰ The firstling of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb; if you do not redeem it, you must break its neck. The firstborn among your sons you shall redeem.

No one shall appear before me empty-handed.
