¹⁶ I, in turn, will do this to you: I will ^[a]summon a ^(A)sudden terror against you, consumption and fever that will make the eyes fail and the ^(B)soul languish; also, ^(C)you will sow your seed uselessly, for your enemies will eat it.

³¹ Your ox will be slaughtered before your eyes, but you will not eat of it; your donkey will be snatched away from you, and will not ^[a]be restored to you; your ^[b]sheep will be given to your enemies, and you will have no one to save you.

^33 (A)A people whom you do not know will eat the produce of your ground and every product of your labor, and you will never be anything but oppressed and mistreated continually.

³ For whenever Israel had sown, the Midianites would come up with the Amalekites and the ^[a]people of the east and ^[b]march against them. ⁴ So they would camp against them and ^(A)destroy the produce of the earth ^[c]as far as Gaza, and ^(B)leave no sustenance in Israel, nor a sheep, ox, or donkey. ⁵ For they would come up with their livestock and their tents, they would come in ^(C)like locusts in number, and both they and their camels were innumerable; and they came into the land to ruin it. ⁶ So Israel was brought ^(D)very low because of Midian, and the sons of Israel cried out to the Lord.
