3 Katika mwaka wa kumi na tano wa utawala wa Kaisari Tiberio, Neno la Mungu lilimfikia Yohana mwana wa Zakaria alipokuwa nyikani. Wakati huo Pontio Pilato alikuwa mtawala wa Yudea; Her ode mtawala wa Galilaya, nduguye Filipo mtawala wa Iturea na Tra koniti; na Lisania alikuwa mtawala wa Abilene. 2 Anasi na Kayafa walikuwa makuhani wakuu.
3 Yohana akazunguka sehemu zote za kando kando ya mto Yordani akihubiri kwamba watu watubu na kubatizwa ili wasamehewe dhambi zao. 4 Kama ilivyoandikwa katika kitabu cha nabii Isaya: “Sauti ya mtu aitae nyikani, ‘Mtayarishieni Bwana njia , nyoosheni sehemu zote atakazopita, 5 jazeni kila bonde, sawazisheni milima yote. 6 Na watu wote watamwona Mwokozi aliyetumwa na Mungu.’ ”
7 Yohana akawaambia wale waliokuja ili awabatize, “Enyi watoto wa nyoka! Ni nani aliyewaonya muepuke hukumu ya Mungu ita kayokuja? 8 Kama kweli mmetubu, basi onyesheni kwa matendo yenu. Wala msidhani kuwa mtasamehewa kwa kuwa ninyi ni uzao wa Ibra himu. Nawaambia wazi, Mungu anaweza kabisa kumpa Ibrahimu watoto kutoka katika haya mawe! 9 Na hivi sasa hukumu ya Mungu, kama shoka kwenye shina la mti, iko juu yenu. Kila mti usiozaa matunda mazuri utakatwa katwa na kutupwa motoni.”
10 Watu wakamwuliza, “Inatupasa tufanyeje basi?” 11 Aka waambia: “Aliye na nguo mbili amgawie asiye na nguo; kama una chakula wape wenye njaa.”
12 Watoza kodi nao pia walikuja ili wabatizwe; wakamwuliza, “Bwana, na sisi inatupasa tufanyeje?”
13 Akawajibu: “ Msimdhulumu mtu kwa kudai kodi zaidi ya ile iliyoamriwa.”
14 Na baadhi ya askari wakamwuliza, “Na sisi je, tufanye nini?” Akawajibu: “Msichukue fedha za watu kwa kutumia nguvu; msiwashtaki watu kwa kuwasingizia makosa; bali mtosheke na misha hara yenu!”
15 Siku hizo watu walikuwa na matazamio makubwa. Wakawa wakijiuliza mioyoni mwao kama Yohana ndiye Kristo.
16 Yohana aliwajibu akawaambia, “Mimi nawabatiza kwa maji. Lakini anayekuja ni mkuu kuliko mimi, sistahili hata kuwa mtumwa wake. Yeye atawabatiza kwa Roho Mtakatifu na kwa moto.
17 “Yuko tayari na pepeto lake mkononi, tayari kusafisha mahali pake pa kukusanyia mazao. Nafaka safi ataiweka ghalani lakini makapi atayachoma kwa moto usiozimika.”
18 Yohana alitumia mifano mingine mingi kuwaonya watu na kuwatangazia Habari Njema. 19 Lakini Yohana alipomkanya Herode kuhusu uhusiano wake na Herodia mke wa kaka yake, na maovu men gine aliyofanya, 20 Herode aliongezea uovu huo kwa kumfunga
Kubatizwa Kwa Bwana Yesu
21 Baada ya watu wote kubatizwa, Yesu naye alibatizwa. Na alipokuwa akiomba, mbingu zilifunguka. 22 Roho Mtakatifu akash uka juu yake kama hua; na sauti ikasikika kutoka mbinguni ikisema: “Wewe ni Mwanangu mpendwa, ninapendezwa nawe.”

23 Yesu alikuwa na umri wa miaka kama thelathini hivi ali poanza kazi ya kuhubiri. Yesu alijulikana kama mtoto wa Yusufu. John the Baptist Prepares the Way(A)(B)
3 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate(C) was governor of Judea, Herod(D) tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— 2 during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,(E) the word of God came to John(F) son of Zechariah(G) in the wilderness. 3 He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.(H) 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:
“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.
5 Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
the rough ways smooth.
6 And all people will see God’s salvation.’”[a](I)
7 John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers!(J) Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?(K) 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’(L) For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 9 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”(M)
10 “What should we do then?”(N) the crowd asked.
11 John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”(O)
12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized.(P) “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”
13 “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,”(Q) he told them.
14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”
He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely(R)—be content with your pay.”
15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John(S) might possibly be the Messiah.(T) 16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with[b] water.(U) But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with[c] the Holy Spirit and fire.(V) 17 His winnowing fork(W) is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”(X) 18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them.
19 But when John rebuked Herod(Y) the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done, 20 Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.(Z)

21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying,(AC) heaven was opened 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him(AD) in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son,(AE) whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”(AF)

11 He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.
12 Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?
13 And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.
14 And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.
15 And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;
16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
17 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.
18 And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.
19 But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,
20 Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.
