Zacchaeus the Tax Collector
19 Jesus entered Jericho(A) and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig(B) tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.(C)
5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.
7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”(D)
8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord,(E) “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything,(F) I will pay back four times the amount.”(G)
9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.(H) 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”(I)

19 Und er kam nach Jericho hinein und zog hindurch.
2 Und siehe, da war ein Mann, genannt Zachäus, ein Oberzöllner, und dieser war reich.
3 Und er wollte gerne Jesus sehen, wer er sei, und konnte es nicht wegen der Volksmenge; denn er war von kleiner Gestalt.
4 Da lief er voraus und stieg auf einen Maulbeerbaum, um ihn zu sehen; denn dort sollte er vorbeikommen.
5 Und als Jesus an den Ort kam, blickte er auf und sah ihn und sprach zu ihm: Zachäus, steige schnell herab; denn heute muss ich in deinem Haus einkehren!
6 Und er stieg schnell herab und nahm ihn auf mit Freuden.
7 Als sie es aber sahen, murrten sie alle und sprachen: Er ist bei einem sündigen Mann eingekehrt, um Herberge zu nehmen!
8 Zachäus aber trat hin und sprach zu dem Herrn: Siehe, Herr, die Hälfte meiner Güter gebe ich den Armen, und wenn ich jemand betrogen habe, so gebe ich es vierfältig zurück!
9 Und Jesus sprach zu ihm: Heute ist diesem Haus Heil widerfahren, weil auch er ein Sohn Abrahams ist;
10 denn der Sohn des Menschen ist gekommen, um zu suchen und zu retten, was verloren ist.

19 Jésus était entré dans Jéricho et traversait la ville. 2 Or, un homme riche appelé Zachée, chef des collecteurs d’impôts, 3 cherchait à voir qui était Jésus, mais il n'y parvenait pas à cause de la foule, car il était de petite taille. 4 Il courut en avant et monta sur un sycomore pour voir Jésus, parce qu'il devait passer par là. 5 Lorsque Jésus fut arrivé à cet endroit, il leva les yeux, [le vit] et lui dit: «Zachée, dépêche-toi de descendre, car il faut que je m’arrête aujourd'hui chez toi.» 6 Zachée s'empressa de descendre et l'accueillit avec joie. 7 En voyant cela, tous murmuraient en disant: «Il est allé loger chez un homme pécheur.» 8 Mais Zachée, se tenant devant le Seigneur, lui dit: «Seigneur, je donne aux pauvres la moitié de mes biens et, si j'ai causé du tort à quelqu'un, je lui rends le quadruple.» 9 Alors Jésus dit à son propos: «Le salut est entré aujourd'hui dans cette maison, parce que lui aussi est un fils d'Abraham. 10 En effet, le Fils de l'homme est venu chercher et sauver ce qui était perdu.»

19 And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.
2 And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.
3 And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.
4 And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.
5 And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.
6 And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.
7 And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.
8 And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord: Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.
9 And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.
10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
