32 but I (A)have prayed for [a]you, that [b]your faith will not fail; and [c]you, when you have [d]turned back, (B)strengthen your brothers.” 33 (C)But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You both to prison and to death!” 34 But He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me.”

35 And He said to them, (D)When I sent you out without money belt and bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?” They said, “No, nothing.” 36 And He said to them, “But now, [e]whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and [f]whoever has no sword is to sell his [g]cloak and buy one. 37 For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me: ‘(E)And He was counted with wrongdoers’; for (F)that which refers to Me has its [h]fulfillment.” 38 They said, “Lord, look, here are two (G)swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”

The Garden of Gethsemane

39 (H)And He came out and went, (I)as was His habit, to (J)the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed Him. 40 (K)Now when He arrived at the place, He said to them, (L)Pray that you do not come into temptation.” 41 And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He (M)knelt down and began to pray, 42 saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this (N)cup from Me; (O)yet not My will, but Yours be done.” 43 [[i]Now an (P)angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. 44 And (Q)being in agony, He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground]. 45 When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow, 46 and He said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and (R)pray that you do not come into temptation.”

Jesus Betrayed by Judas

47 (S)While He was still speaking, behold, a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading the way for them; and he approached Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 When those who were around Him saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the (T)sword?” 50 And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 But Jesus responded and said, [j]Stop! No more of this.” And He touched his ear and healed him. 52 And Jesus said to the chief priests and (U)officers of the temple and elders who had come against Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs (V)as you would against a man inciting a revolt? 53 While I was with you daily in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me; but [k]this hour and the power of darkness are yours.”

Jesus’ Arrest

54 (W)Now they arrested Him and led Him away, and brought Him to the house of the high priest; but (X)Peter was following at a distance. 55 (Y)After they kindled a fire in the middle of (Z)the courtyard and sat down together, Peter was sitting among them. 56 And a slave woman, seeing him as he sat in the firelight, and staring at him, said, “This man was with Him as well.” 57 But he denied it, saying, “I do not know Him, woman!” 58 And a little later, (AA)another person saw him and said, “You are one of them too!” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!” 59 And after about an hour had passed, some other man began to insist, saying, “Certainly this man also was with Him, (AB)for he, too, is a Galilean.” 60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about!” And immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61 And then (AC)the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, (AD)Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.” 62 And he went out and wept bitterly.

32 But I have prayed for you,(A) Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”(B)

33 But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”(C)

34 Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”

35 Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals,(D) did you lack anything?”

“Nothing,” they answered.

36 He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37 It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’[a];(E) and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.”

38 The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.”

“That’s enough!” he replied.

Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives(F)

39 Jesus went out as usual(G) to the Mount of Olives,(H) and his disciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”(I) 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down(J) and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup(K) from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”(L) 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.(M) 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.[b]

45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”(N)

Jesus Arrested(O)

47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”

49 When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?”(P) 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.

51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.

52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard,(Q) and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts,(R) and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour(S)—when darkness reigns.”(T)

Peter Disowns Jesus(U)

54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest.(V) Peter followed at a distance.(W) 55 And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.”

57 But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.

58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”

“Man, I am not!” Peter replied.

59 About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”(X)

60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord(Y) turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.”(Z) 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.
