¹⁹ But ^(A)Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brother's wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done,

³ and ^(A)Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod's household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them^[a] out of their means.

Herod Is Perplexed by Jesus

^7 (A)Now ^(B)Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that ^(C)John had been raised from the dead,

⁹ Herod said, “John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” And ^(A)he sought to see him.

Lament over Jerusalem

³¹ At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him, “Get away from ^(A)here, for ^(B)Herod wants to kill you.”

⁷ And when he learned that he belonged to ^(A)Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time.

The Death of John the Baptist

14 ^(A)At that time ^(B)Herod the tetrarch heard about the fame of Jesus,

²⁷ for truly in this city there were gathered together against your ^(A)holy servant Jesus, ^(B)whom you anointed, both ^(C)Herod and ^(D)Pontius Pilate, along ^(E)with the Gentiles and ^(F)the peoples of Israel,

Barnabas and Saul Sent Off

13 Now there were in the church at Antioch ^(A)prophets and ^(B)teachers, ^(C)Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger,^[a] Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a member of the court of ^(D)Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

The Death of John the Baptist

^14 (A)King Herod heard of it, for Jesus'^[a] name had become known. Some^[b] said, ^(B)“John the Baptist^[c] has been raised from the dead. That is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.”
