Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Servant^(A)

7 After Jesus^[a] had finished saying all these things^[b] to the people who were there listening, he went to Capernaum. ² There a centurion’s servant, whom he valued highly, was sick and about to die. ³ When the centurion^[c] heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him to ask him to come and save his servant’s life. ⁴ So they went to Jesus and begged him repeatedly, “He deserves to have this done for him, ⁵ because he loves our people and built our synagogue for us.”

⁶ So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to tell Jesus,^[d] “Sir,^[e] stop troubling yourself, because I’m not worthy to have you come under my roof. ⁷ That’s why I didn’t presume to come to you. But just say the word, and let my servant be healed, ⁸ because I, too, am a man under authority and have soldiers under me. I say to one ‘Go’ and he goes, to another ‘Come’ and he comes, and to my servant ‘Do this’ and he does it.”

⁹ When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him. Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found this kind of faith!” ¹⁰ Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant in perfect health.

Jesus Heals an Official’s Son^(A)

⁴³ Two days later, Jesus^[a] left for Galilee from there, ⁴⁴ since Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country. ⁴⁵ When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him because they had seen everything that he had done in Jerusalem during the festival and because they, too, had gone to the festival. ⁴⁶ So Jesus^[b] returned to Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. Meanwhile, in Capernaum there was a government official whose son was ill. ⁴⁷ When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him repeatedly to come down and heal his son, because he was about to die.

⁴⁸ Jesus told him, “Unless you people^[c] see signs and wonders, you will never believe.”

⁴⁹ The official told him, “Sir,^[d] please come down before my little boy dies.”

⁵⁰ Jesus told him, “Go home. Your son will live.” The man believed what Jesus told him and started back home.

⁵¹ While he was on his way, his servants met him and told him that his child^[e] was alive. ⁵² So he asked them at what hour he had begun to recover, and they told him, “The fever left him yesterday at one o’clock in the afternoon.”^[f]

⁵³ Then the father realized that this was the very hour when Jesus had told him, “Your son will live.” So he himself believed, along with his whole family.

⁵⁴ Now this was the second sign that Jesus did after coming from Judea to Galilee.
