The Third Prediction of His Death

³² They^(A) were on the road, going up to Jerusalem,^(B) and Jesus was walking ahead of them. The disciples were astonished, but those who followed him were afraid.^(C) Taking the Twelve aside again, he began to tell them the things that would happen to him.^(D)

⁴⁷ Then Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, “Here truly is an Israelite^(A) in whom there is no deceit.”

⁴⁸ “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.

“Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you,” Jesus answered.

²⁴ Jesus, however, would not entrust himself to them, since he knew them all ²⁵ and because he did not need anyone to testify about man; for he himself knew what was in man.^(A)

¹⁷ “I don’t have a husband,” she answered.

“You have correctly said, ‘I don’t have a husband,’” Jesus said. ¹⁸ “For you’ve had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.”

³ “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” Jesus answered. “This came about so that God’s works^(A) might be displayed in him.
