^33 (A)When the ^[a](B)sixth hour came, darkness ^[b]fell over the whole land until the ^[c](C)ninth hour. ³⁴ At the ^[d](D)ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “^(E)Eloi, Eloi, lema sabaktanei?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” ³⁵ And when some of the bystanders heard Him, they began saying, “Look! He is calling for Elijah!” ³⁶ And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, “^[e]Let us see if Elijah comes to take Him down.” ^37 (F)But Jesus let out a loud cry, and ^[f]died. ^38 (G)And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. ^39 (H)And when the centurion, who was standing ^[g]right in front of Him, saw that He ^[h]died in this way, he said, “Truly this man was ^[i]the Son of God!”

^40 (I)Now there were also some women watching from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of ^[j]James ^(J)the ^[k]Less and Joses, and ^(K)Salome. ⁴¹ When He was in Galilee, they used to follow Him and ^(L)serve Him; and there were many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.

^45 (A)Now from the ^[a]sixth hour darkness ^[b]fell upon all the land until the ^[c]ninth hour. ⁴⁶ And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “^(B)Eli, Eli, lema sabaktanei?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” ⁴⁷ And some of those who were standing there, when they heard it, said, “This man is calling for Elijah.” ⁴⁸ And ^(C)immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink. ⁴⁹ But the rest of them said, “^[d]Let us see if Elijah comes to save Him^[e].” ⁵⁰ And Jesus ^(D)cried out again with a loud voice, and gave up His spirit. ^51 (E)And behold, ^(F)the ^[f]veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and ^(G)the earth shook and the rocks were split. ⁵² Also the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the ^[g]saints who had ^(H)fallen asleep were raised; ⁵³ and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection, they entered ^(I)the holy city and appeared to many. ^54 (J)Now as for the centurion and those who were with him ^(K)keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw ^(L)the earthquake and the other things that were happening, they became extremely frightened and said, “Truly this was ^[h](M)the Son of God!”

^55 (N)And many women were there watching from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee while ^(O)caring for Him. ⁵⁶ Among them were ^(P)Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and ^(Q)the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

^44 (A)It was now about ^[a](B)the sixth hour, and darkness came over the entire land until ^[b]the ninth hour, ^45 [c]because the sun stopped shining; and ^(C)the veil of the temple was torn ^[d]in two. ⁴⁶ And Jesus, ^(D)crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, ^(E)into Your hands I entrust My spirit.” And having said this, He ^[e]died. ^47 (F)Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he began ^(G)praising God, saying, “This man was in fact ^[f]innocent.” ⁴⁸ And all the crowds who came together for this spectacle, after watching what had happened, began to return home, ^[g](H)beating their chests. ^49 (I)And all His acquaintances and ^(J)the women who accompanied Him from Galilee were standing at a distance, seeing these things.
