19 (A)Now Herodias was holding a grudge against him and was wanting to put him to death and was not able; 20 for (B)Herod was afraid of John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he was keeping him safe. And when he heard him, he was very perplexed; [a]but he [b]used to enjoy listening to him. 21 And a strategic day came when Herod on his birthday (C)gave a banquet for his great men and [c]military commanders and the leading men (D)of Galilee;

New International Version
19 So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, 20 because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man.(A) When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled[a]; yet he liked to listen to him.
21 Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet(B) for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.(C)
