39 But (A)the Lord said to him, “Now (B)you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the platter; but [a]inside of you, you are full of robbery and wickedness. 40 (C)You foolish ones, did not He who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But (D)give that which is within as charity, and [b]then all things are (E)clean for you.
42 “(F)But woe to you Pharisees! For you (G)pay tithe of mint and rue and every kind of garden herb, and yet disregard justice and the love of God; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others. 43 Woe to you Pharisees! For you (H)love the chief seats in the synagogues and the respectful greetings in the market places. 44 (I)Woe to you! For you are like [c]concealed tombs, and the people who walk over them are unaware of it.”
45 One of the [d](J)lawyers *said to Him in reply, “Teacher, when You say this, You insult us too.” 46 But He said, “Woe to you (K)lawyers as well! For (L)you weigh men down with burdens hard to bear, [e]while you yourselves will not even touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 (M)Woe to you! For you build the [f]tombs of the prophets, and it was your fathers who killed them. 48 So you are witnesses and approve the deeds of your fathers; because it was they who killed them, and you build their tombs. 49 For this reason also (N)the wisdom of God said, ‘(O)I will send to them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and some they will [g]persecute, 50 so that the blood of all the prophets, shed (P)since the foundation of the world, may be [h]charged against this generation, 51 from (Q)the blood of Abel to (R)the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the house of God; yes, I tell you, it shall be [i]charged against this generation.’ 52 Woe to you [j](S)lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge; (T)you yourselves did not enter, and you hindered those who were entering.”
53 When He left there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be very hostile and to question Him closely on many subjects, 54 (U)plotting against Him (V)to catch [k]Him in something He might say.

39 Then the Lord(A) said to him, “Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.(B) 40 You foolish people!(C) Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But now as for what is inside you—be generous to the poor,(D) and everything will be clean for you.(E)
42 “Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth(F) of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God.(G) You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.(H)
43 “Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and respectful greetings in the marketplaces.(I)
44 “Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves,(J) which people walk over without knowing it.”
45 One of the experts in the law(K) answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.”
46 Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.(L)
47 “Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them. 48 So you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.(M) 49 Because of this, God in his wisdom(N) said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’(O) 50 Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, 51 from the blood of Abel(P) to the blood of Zechariah,(Q) who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.(R)
52 “Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.”(S)
53 When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions, 54 waiting to catch him in something he might say.(T)
