The Yeast of the Pharisees and of Herod^(A)

¹⁴ Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread and did not have more than one loaf with them in the boat. ¹⁵ He warned them, “Take heed. Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.”

¹⁶ They reasoned among themselves, saying, “It is because we have no bread.”

¹⁷ Being aware of it, Jesus said to them, “Why do you reason that you have no bread? Do you still not perceive or understand? Are your hearts still hardened? ¹⁸ Having eyes, do you not see? Having ears, do you not hear?^[a] And do you not remember? ¹⁹ When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you collect?”

They said to Him, “Twelve.”

²⁰ “And the seven among the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you collect?”

They said, “Seven.”

²¹ He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”
