^33 (A)They came to Capernaum; and when He ^[a]was in ^(B)the house, He began to question them, “What were you discussing on the way?” ³⁴ But they kept silent, for on the way ^(C)they had discussed with one another which of them was the greatest. ³⁵ Sitting down, He called the twelve and *said to them, “^(D)If anyone wants to be first, ^[b]he shall be last of all and servant of all.” ³⁶ Taking a child, He set him ^[c]before them, and taking him in His arms, He said to them, ³⁷ “^(E)Whoever receives ^[d]one child like this in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me does not receive Me, but Him who sent Me.”

The Test of Greatness

^46 (A)An argument ^[a]started among them as to which of them might be the greatest. ⁴⁷ But Jesus, ^(B)knowing ^[b]what they were thinking in their heart, took a child and stood him by His side, ⁴⁸ and said to them, “^(C)Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me; ^(D)for the one who is least among all of you, this is the one who is great.”
