Jesus Before the Sanhedrin^(A)

⁵³ They led Jesus away to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes were assembled with him. ⁵⁴ Peter followed Him at a distance into the courtyard of the high priest. He sat with the guards and warmed himself by the fire.

⁵⁵ Now the chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin requested testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none. ⁵⁶ Many bore false witness against Him, but their testimonies did not agree.

⁵⁷ Then some rose up and bore false witness against Him, saying, ⁵⁸ “We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another not made with hands.’ ” ⁵⁹ But still their testimony did not agree.

⁶⁰ Then the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Do You answer nothing? What is it which these men testify against You?” ⁶¹ But He kept silent and answered nothing.

Again the high priest asked Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?”

⁶² Jesus said, “I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”

⁶³ The high priest tore his robes, saying, “What need do we have of any further witnesses? ⁶⁴ You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”

They all condemned Him as guilty unto death. ⁶⁵ Then some began to spit on Him, and to blindfold Him, and to strike Him, saying to Him, “Prophesy!” And the guards struck Him with the palms of their hands.

Peter’s Denial of Jesus^(A)

⁵⁴ Then they arrested Him, and led Him away, and brought Him into the high priest’s house. Peter followed at a distance. ⁵⁵ But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them.

The Mocking and Whipping of Jesus^(A)

⁶³ The men who guarded Jesus mocked Him and whipped Him. ⁶⁴ When they had blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the face and asked Him, “Prophesy! Who struck You?” ⁶⁵ And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him.

Jesus Before the Council^(B)

⁶⁶ When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him away to their council, saying, ⁶⁷ “Are You the Christ? Tell us!”

He said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe. ⁶⁸ And if I also question you, you will not answer Me or release Me. ⁶⁹ From now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”

⁷⁰ They all said, “Are You then the Son of God?”

He said to them, “You truly say that I am.”

⁷¹ Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? We have heard it from His own mouth.”

¹³ First they led Him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year. ¹⁴ Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

The High Priest Questions Jesus^(A)

¹⁹ The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His teaching.

²⁰ Jesus answered him, “I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and I said nothing in secret. ²¹ Why do you ask Me? Ask those who heard Me and what I have said to them. Certainly they know what I said.”

²² When He had said this, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, “Is that how You answer the high priest?”

²³ Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil, but if well, why do you strike me?” ²⁴ Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
