Jesus Is Mocked

¹⁶^(A)And the soldiers led him away inside ^(B)the palace (that is, ^(C)the governor's headquarters),^[a] and they called together the whole ^(D)battalion.^[b] ¹⁷And they clothed him in ^(E)a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. ¹⁸And they began to salute him, ^(F)“Hail, King of the Jews!” ¹⁹And they were striking his head with a reed and ^(G)spitting on him and ^(H)kneeling down in homage to him. ²⁰And when they had ^(I)mocked him, they stripped him of ^(J)the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they ^(K)led him out to crucify him.

The Crucifixion

²¹^(L)And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. ²²^(M)And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). ²³And they offered him wine mixed with ^(N)myrrh, but he did not take it. ²⁴And they crucified him and ^(O)divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. ²⁵And ^(P)it was the third hour^[c] when they crucified him. ²⁶And the inscription of the charge against him read, ^(Q)“The King of the Jews.” ²⁷And with him they crucified two ^(R)robbers, ^(S)one on his right and one on his left.^[d] ²⁹And ^(T)those who passed by derided him, ^(U)wagging their heads and saying, ^(V)“Aha! ^(W)You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, ³⁰save yourself, and come down from the cross!” ³¹So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, ^(X)“He saved others; ^(Y)he cannot save himself. ³²Let ^(Z)the Christ, ^(AA)the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may ^(AB)see and believe.” ^(AC)Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.

²Why should the nations say,
^(C)“Where is their God?”
³^(D)Our God is in the heavens;
^(E)he does all that he pleases.

⁴^(F)Their idols are silver and gold,
    ^(G)the work of human hands.
⁵They have mouths, ^(H)but do not speak;
    eyes, but do not see.
⁶They have ears, but do not hear;
    noses, but do not smell.
⁷They have hands, but do not feel;
    feet, but do not walk;
    and they do not make a sound in their throat.
⁸^(I)Those who make them become like them;
    so do all who trust in them.

⁹O ^(J)Israel,^[a] ^(K)trust in the Lord!
    He is their ^(L)help and their shield.
¹⁰O ^(M)house of Aaron, trust in the Lord!
    He is their help and ^(N)their shield.
¹¹You ^(O)who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord!
    He is their help and their shield.

¹²The Lord has remembered us; he will bless us;
    he will bless ^(P)the house of Israel;
    he will bless ^(Q)the house of Aaron;
¹³he will ^(R)bless those who fear the Lord,
    ^(S)both the small and the great.

¹⁴May the Lord ^(T)give you increase,
you and your children!
¹⁵May ^(U)you be blessed by the Lord,
^(V)who made heaven and earth!

¹⁶The heavens are the Lord's heavens,
    but the earth he has given to the children of man.
¹⁷^(W)The dead do not praise the Lord,
    nor do any who go down into ^(X)silence.
¹⁸But ^(Y)we will bless the Lord
    from this time forth and forevermore.
