Jesus Dies on the Cross^(A)

³³ At noon,^[a] darkness came over the whole land^[b] until three in the afternoon.^{[c] 34} At three o’clock,^[d] Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, eloi,^[e] lema sabachthani?”^[f] (which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”)^[g]

³⁵ When some of the people standing there heard this, they said, “Listen! He’s calling for Elijah!”^[h]

³⁶ So someone ran and soaked a sponge in some sour wine. Then he put it on a stick and offered Jesus^[i] a drink, saying, “Wait! Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down!”

³⁷ Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. ³⁸ The curtain^[j] in the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom. ³⁹ When the centurion^[k] who stood facing Jesus^[l] saw how he had cried out and^[m] breathed his last, he said, “This man certainly was the Son of God!”

⁴⁰ Now there were women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene,^[n] Mary the mother of young James and Joseph, and Salome. ⁴¹ They used to accompany him and care for him while he was in Galilee. Many other women who had come up to Jerusalem with him were there, too.

⁴⁴ It was already about noon,^[a] and the whole land^[b] became dark until three in the afternoon^{[c] 45} because the sun had stopped shining, and the curtain^[d] in the sanctuary was torn in two. ⁴⁶ Then Jesus cried out with a loud voice and said, “Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit.”^[e] After he said this, he breathed his last.

⁴⁷ When the centurion^[f] saw what had taken place, he praised God and said, “This man certainly was righteous!” ⁴⁸ When all the crowds who had come together for this spectacle saw what had taken place, they beat their chests and left. ⁴⁹ But all his acquaintances, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, were standing at a distance watching these things.

²⁸ After this, when Jesus realized that everything was now completed, he said (in order to fulfill the Scripture), “I’m thirsty.” ²⁹ A jar of sour wine was standing there, so they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth. ³⁰ After Jesus had taken the wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then he bowed his head and released his spirit.
