38 (A)For whoever (B)is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”

The Transfiguration of Christ(C)

And He said to them, (D)“Assuredly, I say to you that there are some standing here who will not taste death till they see (E)the kingdom of God [a]present with power.”

Jesus Transfigured on the Mount

(F)Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John, and led them up on a high mountain apart by themselves; and He was transfigured before them. His clothes became shining, exceedingly (G)white, like snow, such as no launderer on earth can whiten them. And Elijah appeared to them with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”— because he did not know what to say, for they were greatly afraid.

And a (H)cloud came and overshadowed them; and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is (I)My beloved Son. (J)Hear Him!” Suddenly, when they had looked around, they saw no one anymore, but only Jesus with themselves.

(K)Now as they came down from the mountain, He commanded them that they should tell no one the things they had seen, till the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 So they kept this word to themselves, questioning (L)what the rising from the dead meant.

11 And they asked Him, saying, “Why do the scribes say (M)that Elijah must come first?”

12 Then He answered and told them, “Indeed, Elijah is coming first and restores all things. And (N)how is it written concerning the Son of Man, that He must suffer many things and (O)be treated with contempt? 13 But I say to you that (P)Elijah has also come, and they did to him whatever they wished, as it is written of him.”

Footnotes

  1. Mark 9:1 having come

38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man(A) will be ashamed of them(B) when he comes(C) in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

And he said to them, “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see that the kingdom of God has come(D) with power.”(E)

The Transfiguration(F)(G)

After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John(H) with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. His clothes became dazzling white,(I) whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.

Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi,(J) it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.)

Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud:(K) “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”(L)

Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.

As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone(M) what they had seen until the Son of Man(N) had risen from the dead. 10 They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what “rising from the dead” meant.

11 And they asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

12 Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man(O) must suffer much(P) and be rejected?(Q) 13 But I tell you, Elijah has come,(R) and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him.”
