²⁷ “All things have been committed to me^(A) by my Father.^(B) No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.^(C)

²⁸ “Come to me,^(D) all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.^{(E) 29} Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,^(F) for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.^{(G) 30} For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”^(H)

¹⁷ In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father^(A) is always at his work^(B) to this very day, and I too am working.” ¹⁸ For this reason they tried all the more to kill him;^(C) not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.^(D)

⁵⁴ Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself,^(A) my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me.^{(B) 55} Though you do not know him,^(C) I know him.^(D) If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.^{(E) 56} Your father Abraham^(F) rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it^(G) and was glad.”

⁵⁷ “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”

⁵⁸ “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born,^(H) I am!”^{(I) 59} At this, they picked up stones to stone him,^(J) but Jesus hid himself,^(K) slipping away from the temple grounds.

Further Conflict Over Jesus’ Claims

²² Then came the Festival of Dedication^[a] at Jerusalem. It was winter, ²³ and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon’s Colonnade.^{(A) 24} The Jews^(B) who were there gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”^(C)

²⁵ Jesus answered, “I did tell you,^(D) but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me,^{(E) 26} but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.^{(F) 27} My sheep listen to my voice; I know them,^(G) and they follow me.^{(H) 28} I give them eternal life,^(I) and they shall never perish;^(J) no one will snatch them out of my hand.^{(K) 29} My Father, who has given them to me,^(L) is greater than all^[b];^(M) no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. ³⁰ I and the Father are one.”^(N)

³¹ Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him,^{(O) 32} but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?”

³³ “We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”^(P)

¹⁴ God said to Moses, “I am who I am.^[a] This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am^(A) has sent me to you.’”

⁷ “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”^(A)

⁸ Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? ⁹ Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? ¹⁰ But I want you to know that the Son of Man^(B) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, ¹¹ “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”

³⁶ “Abba,^[a] Father,”^(A) he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup^(B) from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”^(C)
