¹⁶`What shall I say that the people of today are like? They are like children who sit in the market. They call to the other children.

¹⁷They say, "We played music for you, but you did not dance. We cried, but you did not cry."

¹⁸John came. He does not eat or drink much. People say, "He has a bad spirit in him!"

¹⁶“To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:

¹⁷“‘We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not mourn.’

¹⁸For John came neither eating^(A) nor drinking,^(B) and they say, ‘He has a demon.’
