The Heart of Man

15 Peter [a]said to Him, “(A)Explain the parable to us.” 16 [b]Jesus said, “Are you also still lacking in understanding? 17 Do you not understand that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and is [c]eliminated? 18 But (B)the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and those things defile the person. 19 (C)For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, acts of adultery, other immoral sexual acts, thefts, false testimonies, and [d]slanderous statements. 20 These are the things that defile the person; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the person.”

16 “Are you still so dull?”(B) Jesus asked them. 17 “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart,(C) and these defile them. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.(D) 20 These are what defile a person;(E) but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”
