16 The Pharisees and Sadducees approached,^(A) and tested him, asking him to show them a sign from heaven.^(B)

The Leaven of the Pharisees and Herod

¹¹ The^(A) Pharisees^(B) came and began to argue with him, demanding of him a sign^(C) from heaven^(D) to test^(E) him. ¹² Sighing deeply in his spirit,^(F) he said, “Why does this generation^(G) demand a sign? Truly I tell you,^(H) no sign will be given to this generation.”

¹⁶ And others, as a test,^(A) were demanding of him a sign^(B) from heaven.

¹⁸ So the Jews replied to him, “What sign will you show us for doing these things?”

³⁰ “What sign, then, are you going to do so that we may see and believe you?” they asked. “What are you going to perform?
