Jesus Foretells His Death

21 (A)From that time [a]Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and (B)suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day. 22 Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “[b]God forbid it, Lord! This shall never [c]happen to You.” 23 But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, (C)Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on [d]God’s interests, but man’s.”

Discipleship Is Costly

24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and (D)take up his cross and follow Me. 25 For (E)whoever wishes to save his [e]life will lose it; but whoever loses his [f]life for My sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the (F)Son of Man (G)is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and (H)will then [g]repay every man according to his [h]deeds.

28 “Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the (I)Son of Man (J)coming in His kingdom.”

Jesus Predicts His Death(A)

21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem(B) and suffer many things(C) at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,(D) and that he must be killed(E) and on the third day(F) be raised to life.(G)

22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”

23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan!(H) You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.(I) 25 For whoever wants to save their life[a] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.(J) 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 27 For the Son of Man(K) is going to come(L) in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.(M)

28 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

22 (A)saying, (B)The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised up on the third day.”

23 And He was saying to them all, (C)If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me. 24 For (D)whoever wishes to save his [a]life will lose it, but whoever loses his [b]life for My sake, he is the one who will save it. 25 For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and (E)loses or forfeits himself? 26 (F)For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory, and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. 27 But I say to you truthfully, (G)there are some of those standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”
