Jesus Heals a Boy with a Demon

¹⁴^(A)And when they came to the crowd, a man came up to him and, kneeling before him, ¹⁵said, “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he has ^(B)seizures and he suffers terribly. For often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. ¹⁶And I brought him to your disciples, and ^(C)they could not heal him.” ¹⁷And Jesus answered, “O faithless and ^(D)twisted generation, how long am I to be with you? ^(E)How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me.” ¹⁸And Jesus ^(F)rebuked the demon,^[a] and it^[b] came out of him, and ^(G)the boy was healed instantly.^[c] ¹⁹Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” ²⁰He said to them, ^(H)“Because of your little faith. For ^(I)truly, I say to you, ^(J)if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, ^(K)you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and ^(L)nothing will be impossible for you.”^[d]

Jesus Again Foretells Death, Resurrection

²²^(M)As they were gathering^[e] in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men, ²³and they will kill him, and he will be raised on ^(N)the third day.” And they were greatly distressed.

Jesus Heals a Boy with an Unclean Spirit

¹⁴^(A)And when they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them. ¹⁵And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, ^(B)were greatly amazed and ran up to him and greeted him. ¹⁶And he asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?” ¹⁷And someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has ^(C)a spirit that makes him mute. ¹⁸And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast it out, and ^(D)they were not able.” ¹⁹And he answered them, “O ^(E)faithless generation, ^(F)how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.” ²⁰And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it ^(G)convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. ²¹And Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. ²²And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But ^(H)if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” ²³And Jesus said to him, ^(I)“‘If you can’! ^(J)All things are possible for one who believes.” ²⁴Immediately the father of the child cried out^[a] and said, “I believe; ^(K)help my unbelief!” ²⁵And when Jesus saw that ^(L)a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, ^(M)“You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” ²⁶And after crying out and ^(N)convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, “He is dead.” ²⁷But Jesus ^(O)took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. ²⁸And when he had ^(P)entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” ²⁹And he said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.”^[b]

Jesus Again Foretells Death, Resurrection

³⁰^(Q)They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he did not want anyone to know, ³¹for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, ^(R)after three days he will rise.” ³²^(S)But they did not understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him.

³⁷^(A)On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met him. ³⁸And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for ^(B)he is my only child. ³⁹And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out. It convulses him so that he foams at the mouth, and shatters him, and will hardly leave him. ⁴⁰And I begged your disciples to cast it out, but ^(C)they could not.” ⁴¹Jesus answered, “O ^(D)faithless and twisted generation, ^(E)how long am I to be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.” ⁴²While he was coming, the demon threw him to the ground and convulsed him. But Jesus ^(F)rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the boy, and ^(G)gave him back to his father. ⁴³And all were astonished at ^(H)the majesty of God.

Jesus Again Foretells His Death

^(I)But while they were all marveling at everything he was doing, Jesus^[a] said ^(J)to his disciples, ⁴⁴“Let these words sink into your ears: ^(K)The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.” ⁴⁵^(L)But they did not understand this saying, and ^(M)it was concealed from them, so that they might not perceive it. And they were afraid to ask him about this saying.
