¹⁵ Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my business?^[a] Are you jealous^[b] because I’m generous?’^[c](A)

¹⁶ “So the last will be first, and the first last.”^[d](B)

The Third Prediction of His Death

¹⁷ While going up to Jerusalem,^(C) Jesus took the 12 disciples aside privately and said to them on the way: ¹⁸ “Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn Him to death.^{(D) 19} Then they will hand Him over to the Gentiles^(E) to be mocked, flogged,^[e] and crucified, and He will be resurrected^[f] on the third day.”

Suffering and Service

²⁰ Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons approached Him with her sons.^(F) She knelt down to ask Him for something.^{(G) 21} “What do you want?” He asked her.

“Promise,”^[g] she said to Him, “that these two sons of mine may sit, one on Your right and the other on Your left, in Your kingdom.”^(H)

²² But Jesus answered, “You don’t know what you’re asking. Are you able to drink the cup^[h] that I am about to drink?”^[i](I)

“We are able,” they said to Him.

God and Caesar

¹³ Then^(A) they sent some of the Pharisees^(B) and the Herodians^(C) to Him to trap Him by what He said.^{[a](D) 14} When they came, they said to Him, “Teacher, we know You are truthful and defer to no one, for You don’t show partiality^[b](E) but teach truthfully the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes^(F) to Caesar or not? ¹⁵ Should we pay, or should we not pay?”

But knowing their hypocrisy,^(G) He said to them, “Why are you testing^(H) Me? Bring Me a denarius^(I) to look at.” ¹⁶ So they brought one. “Whose image^(J) and inscription^(K) is this?” He asked them.

“Caesar’s,” they said.

¹⁷ Then Jesus told them, “Give back to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”^(L) And they were amazed^(M) at Him.
