The Question About David’s Son(A)

41 While the Pharisees were assembled, Jesus asked them, 42 “What do you think of the Christ? Whose Son is He?”

They said to Him, “The Son of David.”

43 He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying:

44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord,
    “Sit at My right hand,
until I make Your enemies
    Your footstool” ’?[a]

45 If David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his Son?” 46 No one was able to answer Him a word, nor from that day on did anyone dare to ask Him any more questions.

Whose Son Is the Messiah?(A)

41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?”

“The son of David,”(B) they replied.

43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says,

44 “‘The Lord said to my Lord:
    “Sit at my right hand
until I put your enemies
    under your feet.”’[a](C)

45 If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” 46 No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.(D)
