Paying Taxes to Caesar

^15 (A)Then the Pharisees went and plotted how ^(B)to entangle him in his words. ¹⁶ And they sent ^(C)their disciples to him, along with ^(D)the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, ^(E)we know that you are true and teach ^(F)the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone's opinion, for ^(G)you are not swayed by appearances.^{[a] 17} Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay ^(H)taxes to ^(I)Caesar, or not?” ¹⁸ But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why ^(J)put me to the test, you hypocrites? ¹⁹ Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius.^{[b] 20} And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” ²¹ They said, “Caesar's.” Then he said to them, ^(K)“Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” ²² When they heard it, they marveled. And they ^(L)left him and went away.

Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

²³ The same day ^(M)Sadducees came to him, ^(N)who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question, ²⁴ saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ^(O)‘If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.’ ²⁵ Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother. ²⁶ So too the second and third, down to the seventh. ²⁷ After them all, the woman died. ²⁸ In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had her.”

²⁹ But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, ^(P)because you know neither the Scriptures nor ^(Q)the power of God. ³⁰ For in the resurrection they neither ^(R)marry nor ^(S)are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. ³¹ And as for the resurrection of the dead, ^(T)have you not read what was said to you by God: ^32 (U)‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.” ³³ And when the crowd heard it, ^(V)they were astonished at his teaching.

The Great Commandment

^34 (W)But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced ^(X)the Sadducees, they gathered together. ^35 (Y)And one of them, ^(Z)a lawyer, asked him a question ^(AA)to test him. ³⁶ “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” ³⁷ And he said to him, ^(AB)“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. ³⁸ This is the great and first commandment. ³⁹ And ^(AC)a second is like it: ^(AD)You shall love your neighbor as yourself. ^40 (AE)On these two commandments depend ^(AF)all the Law and the Prophets.”

Whose Son Is the Christ?

^41 (AG)Now while the Pharisees ^(AH)were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, ⁴² saying, “What do you think about ^(AI)the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, ^(AJ)“The son of David.” ⁴³ He said to them, “How is it then that David, ^(AK)in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,

⁴⁵ If then David calls him Lord, ^(AM)how is he his son?” ^46 (AN)And no one was able to answer him a word, ^(AO)nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

Paying Taxes to Caesar

^13 (A)And they sent to him some of ^(B)the Pharisees and some of ^(C)the Herodians, to ^(D)trap him in his talk. ¹⁴ And they came and said to him, “Teacher, ^(E)we know that you are true and do not care about anyone's opinion. Should we pay them, or should we not?” ¹⁵ But, knowing ^(J)their hypocrisy, he said to them, “Why ^(K)put me to the test? Bring me ^(L)a denarius^[b] and let me look at it.” ¹⁶ And they brought one. And he said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said to him, “Caesar's.” ¹⁷ Jesus said to them, ^(M)“Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” And they marveled at him.

The Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

¹⁸ And ^(N)Sadducees came to him, ^(O)who say that there is no resurrection. And they asked him a question, saying, ¹⁹ “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that ^(P)if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife, but leaves no child, the man^[c] must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. ²⁰ There were seven brothers; the first took a wife, and when he died left no offspring. ²¹ And the second took her, and died, leaving no offspring. And the third likewise. ²² And the seven left no offspring. Last of all the woman also died. ²³ In the resurrection, when they rise again, whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife.”

²⁴ Jesus said to them, “Is this not the reason you are wrong, because ^(Q)you know neither the Scriptures nor ^(R)the power of God? ²⁵ For when they rise from the dead, they neither ^(S)marry nor ^(T)are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. ²⁶ And as for the dead being raised, ^(U)have you not read in ^(V)the book of Moses, in ^(W)the passage about the bush, how God spoke to him, saying, ^(X)‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? ²⁷ He is not God of the dead, but of the living. You are quite wrong.”

The Great Commandment

^28 (Y)And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” ²⁹ Jesus answered, “The most important is, ^(Z)‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, ^(AA)the Lord is one. ³⁰ And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ ^31 (AB)The second is this: ^(AC)‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment ^(AD)greater than these.” ³² And the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher. You have truly said that ^(AE)he is one, and ^(AF)there is no other besides him. ³³ And to love him with all the heart and with all ^(AG)the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, ^(AH)is much more than all ^(AI)whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” ³⁴ And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” ^(AJ)And after that no one dared to ask him any more questions.

Whose Son Is the Christ?

^35 (AK)And as ^(AL)Jesus taught in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that ^(AM)the Christ is the son of David? ³⁶ David himself, ^(AN)in the Holy Spirit, declared,

³⁷ David himself calls him Lord. So ^(AQ)how is he his son?” And the great throng ^(AR)heard him gladly.

^20 (A)So they ^(B)watched him and sent spies, who ^(C)pretended to be sincere, that they might ^(D)catch him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of ^(E)the governor. ²¹ So they asked him, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and ^(F)show no partiality,^[a] but truly teach ^(G)the way of God. ²² Is it lawful for us to give ^(H)tribute to ^(I)Caesar, or not?” ²³ But he perceived their ^(J)craftiness, and said to them, ²⁴ “Show me ^(K)a denarius.^[b] Whose likeness and inscription does it have?” They said, “Caesar's.” ²⁵ He said to them, “Then ^(L)render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” ²⁶ And they were not able in the presence of the people ^(M)to catch him in what he said, but marveling at his answer they became silent.

Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

²⁷ There came to him ^(N)some Sadducees, ^(O)those who deny that there is a resurrection, ²⁸ and they asked him a question, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us ^(P)that if a man's brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man^[c] must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. ²⁹ Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died without children. ³⁰ And the second ³¹ and the third took her, and likewise all seven left no children and died. ³² Afterward the woman also died. ³³ In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had her as wife.”

³⁴ And Jesus said to them, ^(Q)“The sons of this age ^(R)marry and ^(S)are given in marriage, ³⁵ but those who are ^(T)considered worthy to attain to ^(U)that age and to the resurrection from the dead ^(V)neither marry ^(W)nor are given in marriage, ³⁶ for ^(X)they cannot die anymore, because they are ^(Y)equal to angels and ^(Z)are ^(AA)sons of God, being ^(AB)sons^[d] of the resurrection. ³⁷ But that the dead are raised, ^(AC)even Moses showed, in ^(AD)the passage about the bush, where he calls ^(AE)the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. ³⁸ Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all ^(AF)live to him.” ³⁹ Then some of the scribes ^(AG)answered, “Teacher, you have spoken well.” ⁴⁰ For ^(AH)they no longer dared to ask him any question.

Whose Son Is the Christ?

^41 (AI)But he said to them, “How can they say that ^(AJ)the Christ is ^(AK)David's son? ⁴² For David himself says in the Book of Psalms,
