The Prayer in Gethsemane^(A)

³⁶ Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane and said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go and pray close by.” ³⁷ He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee and began to be sorrowful and troubled. ³⁸ Then He said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Wait here, and keep watch with Me.”

³⁹ He went a little farther, and falling on His face, He prayed, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.”

⁴⁰ Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “So, could you not keep watch with Me one hour? ⁴¹ Watch and pray that you enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

⁴² He went away a second time and prayed, “O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.”

⁴³ Again, He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. ⁴⁴ So leaving them again, He went away and prayed the third time, saying the same words.

⁴⁵ Then He came to His disciples and said to them, “Sleep on now, and take your rest. Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. ⁴⁶ Rise, let us be going. Look, he who betrays Me is at hand.”

The Prayer on the Mount of Olives^(A)

³⁹ According to His custom, He came out and went to the Mount of Olives. And His disciples followed Him. ⁴⁰ When He came there, He said to them, “Pray that you may not fall into temptation.” ⁴¹ He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, ⁴² “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me. Nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” ⁴³ An angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. ⁴⁴ And being in anguish, He prayed more earnestly. And His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

⁴⁵ When He rose from prayer and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow. ⁴⁶ He said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray, lest you fall into temptation.”
