Jesus’ Betrayal and Arrest

^47 (A)While He was still speaking, behold, ^(B)Judas, one of the twelve, came up ^[a]accompanied by a large crowd with swords and clubs, who came from the chief priests and elders of the people. ⁴⁸ Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him.” ⁴⁹ Immediately Judas went to Jesus and said, “Hail, ^(C)Rabbi!” and kissed Him. ⁵⁰ And Jesus said to him, “^(D)Friend, do what you have come for.” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him.

⁵¹ And behold, ^(E)one of those who were with Jesus ^[b]reached and drew out his ^(F)sword, and struck the ^(G)slave of the high priest and ^[c]cut off his ear. ⁵² Then Jesus *said to him, “Put your sword back into its place; for ^(H)all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword. ⁵³ Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve ^[d](I)legions of ^(J)angels? ⁵⁴ How then will ^(K)the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?”

⁵⁵ At that time Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? ^(L)Every day I used to sit in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me. ⁵⁶ But all this has taken place to fulfill ^(M)the Scriptures of the prophets.” Then all the disciples left Him and fled.

Betrayal and Arrest

^43 (A)Immediately while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, *came up ^[a]accompanied by a crowd with swords and clubs, who were from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. ⁴⁴ Now he who was betraying Him had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him and lead Him away ^[b]under guard.” ⁴⁵ After coming, Judas immediately went to Him, saying, “^(B)Rabbi!” and kissed Him. ⁴⁶ They laid hands on Him and seized Him. ⁴⁷ But one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and ^[c]cut off his ear. ⁴⁸ And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me, as you would against a robber? ⁴⁹ Every day I was with you ^(C)in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me; but this has taken place to fulfill the Scriptures.” ⁵⁰ And they all left Him and fled.

^3 (A)Judas then, having received ^(B)the Roman ^[a]cohort and ^(C)officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, *came there with lanterns and ^(D)torches and weapons. ⁴ So Jesus, ^(E)knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, went forth and *said to them, “^(F)Whom do you seek?” ⁵ They answered Him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He *said to them, “I am He.” And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them. ⁶ So when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground. ⁷ Therefore He again asked them, “^(G)Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.” ⁸ Jesus answered, “I told you that I am He; so if you seek Me, let these go their way,” ⁹ to fulfill the word which He spoke, “^(H)Of those whom You have given Me I lost not one.” ¹⁰ Simon Peter then, ^(I)having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave’s name was Malchus. ¹¹ So Jesus said to Peter, “Put the sword into the sheath; ^(J)the cup which the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?”
