48 Now His betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him.” 49 Immediately he went up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” (A)and kissed Him.
50 But Jesus said to him, (B)“Friend, why have you come?”
Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took Him. 51 And suddenly, (C)one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.
52 But Jesus said to him, “Put your sword in its place, (D)for all who take the sword will [a]perish by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with (E)more than twelve legions of angels? 54 How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, (F)that it must happen thus?”
55 In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not seize Me. 56 But all this was done that the (G)Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.”
Then (H)all the disciples forsook Him and fled.

57 (J)And those who had laid hold of Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.

48 Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign previously, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; arrest Him.” 49 And immediately Judas went up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, (A)Rabbi!” and kissed Him. 50 But Jesus said to him, “(B)Friend, do what you have come for.” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and arrested Him.
51 And behold, (C)one of those who were with Jesus [a]reached and drew his (D)sword, and struck the (E)slave of the high priest and [b]cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus *said to him, “Put your sword back into its place; for (F)all those who take up the sword will perish by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve [c](G)legions of (H)angels? 54 How then would (I)the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?”
55 At that time Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a man inciting a revolt? (J)Every day I used to sit within the temple grounds teaching, and you did not arrest Me. 56 But all this has taken place so that (K)the Scriptures of the prophets will be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left Him and fled.

57 (L)Those who had arrested Jesus led Him away to (M)Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together.

48 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him.” 49 Immediately Judas went to Jesus and said, “Greetings (rejoice), Rabbi!” And he [a]kissed Him [in a deliberate act of betrayal]. 50 Jesus said to Judas, “Friend, do what you came for.” Then they came and seized Jesus and arrested Him.
51 And [b]one of those who were with Jesus reached out and drew his sword, and struck [Malchus] the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear.(A) 52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back in its place; for all those who habitually draw the sword will die by the sword.(B) 53 Do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will immediately provide Me with more than twelve [c]legions of angels? 54 How then will the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen this way?”
55 At that moment Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? Day after day I used to sit in the porches and courts of the temple teaching, and you did not arrest Me. 56 But all this has taken place so that the Scriptures of the prophets would be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted Him and fled.

- Matthew 26:57 It was unlawful for a criminal court proceeding to be held at night. Further, although the Sanhedrin (Jewish High Court) was granted substantial power to act by the Roman government, the Sanhedrin could not impose the death penalty on a criminal. Court cases requesting a death penalty to be imposed by the Roman government were to be held publicly in the temple. The officials of the Sanhedrin waited until morning to announce their verdict, perhaps in a token attempt to legalize their unlawful gathering.

48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!”(A) and kissed him.
50 Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”[a](B)
Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51 With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword,(C) drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.(D)
52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.(E) 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?(F) 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled(G) that say it must happen in this way?”
55 In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching,(H) and you did not arrest me. 56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.”(I) Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.
