Jesus before Caiaphas

57 (A)Those who had seized Jesus led Him away to (B)Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together. 58 But (C)Peter was following Him at a distance as far as the (D)courtyard of the high priest, and entered in, and sat down with the [a](E)officers to see the outcome.

59 Now the chief priests and the whole [b](F)Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death. 60 They did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on (G)two came forward, 61 and said, “This man stated, ‘(H)I am able to destroy the [c]temple of God and to rebuild it [d]in three days.’” 62 The high priest stood up and said to Him, “Do You not answer? What is it that these men are testifying against You?” 63 But (I)Jesus kept silent. (J)And the high priest said to Him, “I [e](K)adjure You by (L)the living God, that You tell us whether You are [f]the Christ, (M)the Son of God.” 64 Jesus *said to him, (N)You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, [g]hereafter you will see (O)the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and (P)coming on the clouds of heaven.”

65 Then the high priest (Q)tore his [h]robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy; 66 what do you think?” They answered, “(R)He deserves death!”

67 (S)Then they (T)spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others [i]slapped Him, 68 and said, “(U)Prophesy to us, You [j]Christ; who is the one who hit You?”

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(A)

57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas(B) the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest.(C) He entered and sat down with the guards(D) to see the outcome.

59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(E) were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses(F) came forward.

Finally two(G) came forward 61 and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”(H)

62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 63 But Jesus remained silent.(I)

The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath(J) by the living God:(K) Tell us if you are the Messiah,(L) the Son of God.”(M)

64 “You have said so,”(N) Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One(O) and coming on the clouds of heaven.”[a](P)

65 Then the high priest tore his clothes(Q) and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What do you think?”

“He is worthy of death,”(R) they answered.

67 Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists.(S) Others slapped him 68 and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?”(T)

Jesus before the Priests

12 (A)So (B)the Roman [a]cohort and the [b]commander and the (C)officers of the Jews, arrested Jesus and bound Him, 13 and led Him to (D)Annas first; for he was father-in-law of (E)Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14 Now Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that (F)it was expedient for one man to die on behalf of the people.

15 (G)Simon Peter was following Jesus, and so was another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered with Jesus into (H)the court of the high priest, 16 (I)but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in. 17 (J)Then the slave-girl who kept the door *said to Peter, “(K)You are not also one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He *said, “I am not.” 18 Now the slaves and the (L)officers were standing there, having made (M)a charcoal fire, for it was cold and they were (N)warming themselves; and Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself.

19 (O)The high priest then questioned Jesus about His disciples, and about His teaching. 20 Jesus answered him, “I (P)have spoken openly to the world; I always (Q)taught in [c]synagogues and (R)in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and I spoke nothing in secret. 21 Why do you question Me? Question those who have heard what I spoke to them; they know what I said.” 22 When He had said this, one of the (S)officers standing nearby (T)struck Jesus, saying, “Is that the way You answer the high priest?” 23 (U)Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?” 24 (V)So Annas sent Him bound to (W)Caiaphas the high priest.

Peter’s Denial of Jesus

25 (X)Now (Y)Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “(Z)You are not also one of His disciples, are you?” He denied it, and said, “I am not.” 26 One of the slaves of the high priest, being a relative of the one (AA)whose ear Peter cut off, *said, “Did I not see you in (AB)the garden with Him?” 27 Peter then denied it again, and immediately (AC)a rooster crowed.

Jesus before Pilate

28 (AD)Then they *led Jesus from (AE)Caiaphas into (AF)the [d]Praetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter into (AG)the [e]Praetorium so that (AH)they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. 29 (AI)Therefore Pilate went out to them and *said, “What accusation do you bring against this Man?” 30 They answered and said to him, “If this Man were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him to you.” 31 So Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law.” The Jews said to him, “We are not permitted to put anyone to death,” 32 to fulfill (AJ)the word of Jesus which He spoke, signifying by what kind of death He was about to die.

33 Therefore Pilate (AK)entered again into the Praetorium, and summoned Jesus and said to Him, “(AL)Are You the King of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered, “Are you saying this [f]on your own initiative, or did others tell you about Me?” 35 Pilate answered, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered You to me; what have You done?” 36 Jesus answered, (AM)My kingdom [g]is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not [h]of this realm.” 37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, (AN)You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, (AO)to testify to the truth. (AP)Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” 38 Pilate *said to Him, “What is truth?”

And when he had said this, he (AQ)went out again to the Jews and *said to them, “(AR)I find no guilt in Him. 39 (AS)But you have a custom that I release someone [i]for you at the Passover; do you wish then that I release [j]for you the King of the Jews?” 40 So they cried out again, saying, “(AT)Not this Man, but Barabbas.” Now Barabbas was a robber.

12 Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials(A) arrested Jesus. They bound him 13 and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas,(B) the high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.(C)

Peter’s First Denial(D)

15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest,(E) he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,(F) 16 but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.

17 “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” she asked Peter.

He replied, “I am not.”(G)

18 It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire(H) they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.(I)

The High Priest Questions Jesus(J)

19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.

20 “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus replied. “I always taught in synagogues(K) or at the temple,(L) where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.(M) 21 Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.”

22 When Jesus said this, one of the officials(N) nearby slapped him in the face.(O) “Is this the way you answer the high priest?” he demanded.

23 “If I said something wrong,” Jesus replied, “testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?”(P) 24 Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas(Q) the high priest.

Peter’s Second and Third Denials(R)

25 Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself.(S) So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?”

He denied it, saying, “I am not.”(T)

26 One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off,(U) challenged him, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?”(V) 27 Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.(W)

Jesus Before Pilate(X)

28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor.(Y) By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace,(Z) because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.(AA) 29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”

30 “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”

31 Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”

“But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected. 32 This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.(AB)

33 Pilate then went back inside the palace,(AC) summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”(AD)

34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”

35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”

36 Jesus said, “My kingdom(AE) is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders.(AF) But now my kingdom is from another place.”(AG)

37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.

Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth.(AH) Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”(AI)

38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.(AJ) 39 But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”

40 They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.(AK)

19 (A)The high priest then questioned Jesus about His disciples, and about His teaching. 20 Jesus answered him, “I (B)have spoken openly to the world; I always (C)taught in [a]synagogues and (D)in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and I spoke nothing in secret. 21 Why do you question Me?
