The King on a Cross^(A)

^32 (B)Now as they came out, ^(C)they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. Him they compelled to bear His cross. ^33 (D)And when they had come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, Place of a Skull, ^34 (E)they gave Him ^[a]sour wine mingled with gall to drink. But when He had tasted it, He would not drink.

^35 (F)Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, ^[b]that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet:

^36 (H)Sitting down, they kept watch over Him there. ³⁷ And they ^(I)put up over His head the accusation written against Him:

THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

^38 (J)Then two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and another on the left.

³⁹ And ^(K)those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads ⁴⁰ and saying, ^(L)“You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! ^(M)If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”

⁴¹ Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the ^[c]scribes and elders, said, ⁴² “He ^(N)saved others; Himself He cannot save. ^[d]If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe ^[e]Him. ^43 (O)He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ”

^44 (P)Even the robbers who were crucified with Him reviled Him with the same thing.

^45 (R)Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. ⁴⁶ And about the ninth hour ^(S)Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, ^(T)“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

⁴⁷ Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, “This Man is calling for Elijah!” ⁴⁸ Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, ^(U)filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink.

⁴⁹ The rest said, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him.”

⁵⁰ And Jesus ^(V)cried out again with a loud voice, and ^(W)yielded up His spirit.

⁵¹ Then, behold, ^(X)the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, ⁵² and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; ⁵³ and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.

^54 (Y)So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, ^(Z)“Truly this was the Son of God!”

⁵⁵ And many women ^(AA)who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to Him, were there looking on from afar, ^56 (AB)among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and ^[f]Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.

^21 (B)Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross. ^22 (C)And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. ^23 (D)Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it. ²⁴ And when they crucified Him, ^(E)they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take.

²⁵ Now ^(F)it was the third hour, and they crucified Him. ²⁶ And ^(G)the inscription of His ^[a]accusation was written above:

THE KING OF THE JEWS.

^27 (H)With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on His left. ^28 [b]So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, ^(I)“And He was numbered with the transgressors.”

²⁹ And ^(J)those who passed by blasphemed Him, ^(K)wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! ^(L)You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, ³⁰ save Yourself, and come down from the cross!”

³¹ Likewise the chief priests also, ^(M)mocking among themselves with the scribes, said, “He saved ^(N)others; Himself He cannot save. ³² Let the Christ, the King of Israel, descend now from the cross, that we may see and ^[c]believe.”

Even ^(O)those who were crucified with Him reviled Him.

³³ Now ^(Q)when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. ³⁴ And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, ^(R)“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

³⁵ Some of those who stood by, when they heard that, said, “Look, He is calling for Elijah!” ³⁶ Then ^(S)someone ran and filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on a reed, and ^(T)offered it to Him to drink, saying, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to take Him down.”

^37 (U)And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed His last.

³⁸ Then ^(V)the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. ³⁹ So ^(W)when the centurion, who stood opposite Him, saw that ^[d]He cried out like this and breathed His last, he said, “Truly this Man was the Son of God!”

^40 (X)There were also women looking on ^(Y)from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the Less and of Joses, and Salome, ⁴¹ who also ^(Z)followed Him and ministered to Him when He was in Galilee, and many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.

^26 (B)Now as they led Him away, they laid hold of a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, who was coming from the country, and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus.

²⁷ And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him. ²⁸ But Jesus, turning to them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. ^29 (C)For indeed the days are coming in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, wombs that never bore, and breasts which never nursed!’ ³⁰ Then they will begin ^(D)‘to say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!” ’ ^31 (E)For if they do these things in the green wood, what will be done in the dry?”

^32 (F)There were also two others, criminals, led with Him to be put to death. ³³ And ^(G)when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left. ^34 [a]Then Jesus said, “Father, ^(H)forgive them, for ^(I)they do not know what they do.”

And ^(J)they divided His garments and cast lots. ³⁵ And ^(K)the people stood looking on. But even the ^(L)rulers with them sneered, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God.”

³⁶ The soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him ^(M)sour wine, ³⁷ and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself.”

^38 (N)And an inscription also was ^[b]written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew:

THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

^39 (O)Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, ^[c]“If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.”

⁴⁰ But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? ⁴¹ And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done ^(P)nothing wrong.” ⁴² Then he said ^[d]to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.”

⁴³ And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in ^(Q)Paradise.”

^44 (S)Now it ^[e]was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. ⁴⁵ Then the sun was ^[f]darkened, and ^(T)the veil of the temple was torn in ^[g]two. ⁴⁶ And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, ^(U)‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ ” ^(V)Having said this, He breathed His last.

^47 (W)So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, “Certainly this was a righteous Man!”

⁴⁸ And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned. ^49 (X)But all His acquaintances, and the women who followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.
