Jesus Appears to His Disciples^(A)

^16 (B)The eleven disciples went to the hill in Galilee where Jesus had told them to go. ¹⁷ When they saw him, they worshiped him, even though some of them doubted. ¹⁸ Jesus drew near and said to them, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. ^19 (C)Go, then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples: baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, ²⁰ and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And I will be with you always, to the end of the age.”

Jesus Appears to the Eleven^(A)

¹⁴ Last of all, Jesus appeared to the eleven disciples as they were eating. He scolded them, because they did not have faith and because they were too stubborn to believe those who had seen him alive. ^15 (B)He said to them, “Go throughout the whole world and preach the gospel to all people. ¹⁶ Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. ¹⁷ Believers will be given the power to perform miracles: they will drive out demons in my name; they will speak in strange tongues; ¹⁸ if they pick up snakes or drink any poison, they will not be harmed; they will place their hands on sick people, and these will get well.”

¹⁹ It was late that Sunday evening, and the disciples were gathered together behind locked doors, because they were afraid of the Jewish authorities. Then Jesus came and stood among them. “Peace be with you,” he said. ²⁰ After saying this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were filled with joy at seeing the Lord. ²¹ Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father sent me, so I send you.” ²² Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. ^23 (B)If you forgive people's sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

Jesus Is Taken Up to Heaven

⁶ When the apostles met together with Jesus, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time give the Kingdom back to Israel?”

⁷ Jesus said to them, “The times and occasions are set by my Father's own authority, and it is not for you to know when they will be. ^8 (A)But when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you will be filled with power, and you will be witnesses for me in Jerusalem, in all of Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
