[a]Then he said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written:

‘He will command his angels concerning you,
    and with their hands they will raise you up
    lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”

Jesus said to him, “It is also written:

‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”

Finally, the devil took him to an exceedingly high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in their splendor.

  1. Matthew 4:6 The devil applies Ps 91:11-12 to the Messiah since it deals with God’s protection of the righteous. Jesus declares (through the words of Deut 6:16) that we should not demand miracles from God as evidence of his care for us.
