Wind and Waves Obey Jesus

²³ As he got into the boat,^(A) his disciples^(B) followed him. ²⁴ Suddenly, a violent storm arose on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves—but Jesus kept sleeping. ²⁵ So the disciples came and woke him up, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to die!”

²⁶ He said to them, “Why are you afraid, you of little faith?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea,^(C) and there was a great calm.

²⁷ The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the sea obey^(D) him!”

³⁶ So they left the crowd and took him along since he was in the boat. And other boats were with him. ³⁷ A great windstorm^(A) arose, and the waves^(B) were breaking over the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. ³⁸ He was in the stern, sleeping^(C) on the cushion. So they woke him up^(D) and said to him, “Teacher! Don’t you care that we’re going to die?” ^(E)

³⁹ He got up, rebuked^(F) the wind, and said to the sea, “Silence!^(G) Be still!” The wind ceased, and there was a great calm. ⁴⁰ Then he said to them, “Why are you afraid?^(H) Do you still have no faith?”

⁴¹ And they were terrified^[a](I) and asked one another, “Who then is this? Even the wind and the sea obey^(J) him!” ^(K)

The Fifth Sign: Walking on Water

¹⁶ When^(A) evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, ¹⁷ got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum.^(B) Darkness had already set in, but Jesus had not yet come to them. ¹⁸ A high wind arose, and the sea began to churn. ¹⁹ After they had rowed about three or four miles,^[a] they saw Jesus walking on the sea. He was coming near the boat, and they were afraid. ²⁰ But he said to them, “It is I.^[b](C) Don’t be afraid.” ²¹ Then they were willing to take him on board, and at once the boat was at the shore where they were heading.
